I am sorry that I am sending an attachment.
I scanned this in from the Wall Street Journal, and then sent it to myself
on e-mail then had to transfer it to Microsoft word. Somehow, I could not
just paste it into this e-mail I guess because it was a picture rather than
text.
Anyway, here is my take on the situation.
I can see that the oil companies have a big interest in what happens in the Middle East with regards to Iraq. Potentially, the US oil companies could stand to make a substancial amount of money if they are indeed able to help develop the oil reserves in that country. However, I still believe that it is a bad idea to go to war with Iraq. Upsetting the other middle eastern countries, as we would surely do, poses more of a threat of lost opportunity than if we were to just develop supplies in other countries, such as Saudi Arabia, and the former Soviet states. I know also that Halliburton has deals with Azerbaijan and Kazahkstan to supply their oil fields. The US should look else where to find their oil and let Iraq have its oil to sell to whomever they see fit. M. Eakin |
