I am sad, too. I am equally fearful of the ignorance in this country. Our freedoms and wealth afford us such apathy. Please understand however, that we are not a direct democracy and if we were, I'm not sure it would help. We use our feelings of ineffectualness as an excuse to be uninvolved. Most people don't even vote because they feel it will not matter. After the events of the last presidential election I hope that will change. Maybe people are becoming more aware of our international relations because of Sept. 11th. Maybe not. Let's hope so. I can't argue with anything else you said other than the fact that most of us voted for Bush... that is simply not true. Most of the people in this country, that is to say most of the people who actually voted, voted for Al Gore, which really is barely one fourth of the country. And in response to the other post regarding "I am sad": I won't get into an endless political debate over how Gore would have handled September 11th versus Bush, except to say that there is really no right way to handle something so tragic, that has never happened before. It is hard to say what would have been the ideal response from our leaders.
