In reply to your comments, JW Sikora, I would be very careful when 
generalizing assumptions about what you call "despotic governments" or 
even "hypocritical governments"....because that is simply NOT true and far 
form the reality that you know as a simple American citizen, with I must admit 
very limited knowledge of International Matters.

If you are so sure that the US can suffice to its energy demand from Canada, 
Mexico or others...then go ahead increase your imports from them, and 
stop "sticking your nose" in the Middle East matters, remove your military 
presence from there...and hopefully the situation will get better without your 
un-needed presence there.
Believe me this will probably solve your problems in terms of oil supply and 
solve the Middle Eastern problems, and noone will blame the other then.
