Re: new Manhattan Project

The search for alternative sources of fuel is extremely important at this point. A new federally funded program to find an alternative to petroleum would certainly be of better value in the long term than a war to gain control of more oil resources. There are so many sources of energy being privately researched, that there could easily be an answer to our energy problems just around the corner. The U.S. would improve it's image by investing in the future of alternative energy sources. Although it is politically unpopular, industrial hemp can provide both bio-diesel and ethanol fuels without producing rediculous pollutants. We should at least give it a serious look. Federally funded research would at least make it look like the most powerful country in the world is trying to make the world a better place. Somehow, I don't see Dubya taking the initiative on this issue. It's not in his interest or the interests of his corporate sponsors. Thomas Jefferson once wrote, "The greatest service which can be rendered any country is to add a useful plant to its culture."
